SIX-million-dollar expansion project at Cedenco's Gisborne Factory

THE SIX-million-dollar expansion project at Cedenco's Gisborne factory was a further indication of how the company views its long-term future in the district.

"We are going to be here for a very long time," managing director Tim Chrisp told the official opening of the new facility yesterday.

Cedenco closed its vegetable processing plant in Hawke's Bay last year and built a new processing plant alongside the existing factory in Innes Street.

"So this is not just a factory project, it's a relocation project," Mr Chrisp said.

"The $6m cost takes the total investment in the Gisborne operation to $11m since shareholders Imanaka bought the company in 2010.

"It is a significant and long-term investment."

The state-of-the-art processing facility includes a frozen goods storage area. In total the development covers 3000 square metres.

The new facility will provide employment for 112 extra staff at the peak period of the season, he said.

It will process frozen, diced, sliced and pureed squash, which is under way, as well as citrus and kiwifruit.

Mr Chrisp thanked the Cedenco team who had put the project together.

"This factory has been well built. It has been done right."

The construction was completed on schedule.

"It went very well, thanks to the work of the construction team," Mr Chrisp said.

Staff member Mark Riddell led a formal blessing ceremony.

Mayor Meng Foon cut the ribbon to declare it officially open.

"Thanks for investing in our place."

The Mayor said the District Council and staff were pleased to support the project.

"The council is trying to improve and support business in the district wherever it can.

"A big congratulations from all of us on the completion of this project in this growing district."

It was also good, the Mayor said, that Cedenco was talking with local iwi about their land use for future crop planting and employment.

Mr Foon presented the shareholders representative, Ryohei Imanaka, with a plaque on behalf of the council, congratulating the company.
